EU creates digital 'twin' of Earth to model climate change
DestinE will supposedly help accuracy of predictions and inform policy
As part of the European Commission’s Green Deal and Digital Strategy, the EU is developing a digital ‘twin’ of the Earth to “predict the interaction between natural phenomena and human activities”. Destination Earth (DestinE) “will unlock the potential of digital modelling of the Earth systems at a level that represents a real breakthrough in terms of accuracy, local detail, access-to-information speed and interactivity. The initial focus will be on the effects of climate change and extreme weather events, their socio-economic impact and possible adaptation and mitigation strategies,” the Eu says. More here
London-based design studio Blond has created a folding charger concept, Fold (above), which aims to address the growing problem of electronic waste in the tech industry, reports Design Week. Up to 11,000 tonnes of electronic waste is created by old and unused chargers every year, according to the European Commission. Fold is a multipurpose charger which can be repaired and upgraded. It consists of a configurable series of casings and a mat which wirelessly charges up to three devices at once. Details here
Fast Company reports on how Precious Plastic, the recycling organisation started by Dutch designer Dave Hakkens, is helping a Saharan refugee camp turn plastic waste into school desks, benches and other useful products. Precious Plastic supplied one of its DIY recycling systems to the camp in Algeria to shred, wash and press plastic material into sheets which can then be used to build products. More details here
The EU has published its strategy for sustainable and circular textiles. Specific measures will include ecodesign requirements for textiles and a Digital Product Passport. Measures to tackle the unintentional release of microplastics from textiles, ensure the accuracy of green claims, and boost circular business models, including reuse and repair services, are also included. In addition, the strategy calls on Fast Fashion businesses to reduce the number of collections per year and act to minimise their carbon and environmental footprints. Download the report here
